Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes on Thursday became the first statewide constitutional officer to join the growing list of people calling on U.S. Sen. Roland Burris to resign amid questions about how Burris got appointed to the Senate.
"Sadly, I believe it is in the best interests of Illinois that Roland Burris resign from his seat in the U.S. Senate," says Hynes' letter, sent to The State Journal-Register by the comptroller's press office on Thursday afternoon.
"As a part of the process leading to Senate confirmation, Burris went before the House Impeachment committee in Springfield to clarify his contacts with former Governor Rod Blagojevich and his advisors prior to the Senate appointment. The purpose of that appearance was clear. If Burris made the case that there were no improper communications, his Senate appointment would be approved.
